How Flamenco Can Help Your Love Life

Mom, Gabriela and me

Threesome anyone?

Do you need a jolt to your jaded outlook on life?

I confess, there are many times I feel less than passionate about my daily life and need a little excitement to get me going.  This past weekend, a last minute gasp of winter wind and rain, I took a bold step and said,

“Seth, we need to see other people.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.  Our fabulous life hangs in the balance.”

Seth looked at me for a long time.  “Well, do what you have to do.”

So I did.  I picked up the phone and dialed a number.

“Ni hao, Mom.  What are you doing Saturday night?”

Let go and lose yourself

We headed into Astoria for a night of wild abandon, Greek food and flamenco.  Just my mom, Seth and me.  First we descended upon Sanfords, my oasis on Broadway, a great place to eat and sample the creative choices of Gus, my friend and board member, and his brother Chris, who do the beer and wine selections.  I can always count on Gus to introduce me to a new and interesting wine or beer.  And sure enough, he did.  I tried a French pinot gris and Seth had a Belgian style ale from Maine.

Then off to the American Bolero Dance Company for a Tablao Flamenco.   We sat knee to knee at a small cafe table in a huge space filled with flamenco aficionados and were transported to a magical space punctuated with the sharp staccato clicks of castenets.   Dancers, insistent and inspired, whirled, stamped and tossed their arms to the accompaniment of two guitars, a percussionist and an expressive interpretive singer.

   Que exitoso!

Here’s what you do

First of all, snap out of your funk.  Bad attitude, bad skin.

Check out the Queens Council on the Arts website for a cool artsy event.  Then, find two of your nearest and dearest and head over to Sanfords in Astoria, Queens to try some of Gus’s recommendations for yourself.  Don’t forget about that French pinot gris!

You will love the way you love life!
