I am ready for Surfing 101

I am going to take surfing lessons this summer.  Now that I am on vacation, I want to do something really local and cool.

My kids are mortified – their Mom on a surfboard?  Oh shoot me now!  And now that I am totally in to it, I am already redesigning surfwear for she surfers.

There is a distinct Rockaway look that natives put on so easily.  Flip flops, T shirts from favorite bars, precincts, extra terrestrial creatures – de rigeur Oakleys or any dark and sexy sunglasses with a name, a baseball cap.  Boys in Rockaway wear the coolest board shorts, or jams.   Actually, they look like low slung fitted long shorts that look like something Michael Phelps would wear if he went surfing.

I love the streaks of seams that curve from front to back and across the back.  Blocks of color that look like an arc of an arm.  You have to be lean and mean to pull this off and surf.

So, I am going to rummage through the racks at the local surf shop and put together a California surfer girl meets New York executive director ensemble to surf in.

If anyone knows a cool surf shop, please let me know.  I may be shopping around for a long board!
